Chair

Beta partnered with Holland & Sherry to launch [001] as the debut piece in the Objects series, a lounge chair that balances playful form with refined usability. The design philosophy leaned into contrast, a strong, engineered framing meets soft, tactile upholstery. With cues from automotive roll-cage structure and high-end textiles, it needed to feel bold, comfortable, and unmistakably Beta in its expression of craft and materiality.

INtroduction

We began by exploring the spatial and ergonomic layout through full-scale foam board mockups, tuning seat dimensions including seat depth, arm height, and seating angles until the form felt relaxed yet purposeful. We then created prototypes in aluminium tube and 3D-printed frame sections to test curvature, line flow, bend radii and material utilisation. Based on those prototypes, we adjusted tube diameters and profile depths, eventually commissioning a specialist automotive racing roll-cage manufacturer to deliver the final frame. Throughout, we tested how fabric, frame, and cushions interact, ensuring tension points and aesthetic junctions felt cohesive.

strategy

Detailing was equally intentional. We incorporated webbing straps and black passivated stainless fixings to give the back cushion sprung support while exposing visual contrast across the structure. The cushions themselves use mixed-density foam cores wrapped in Holland & Sherry’s Chamonix fabric, chosen for its stretch, texture, and durability. The mandrel-bent steel frame was powder coated in a high gloss finish, creating a bold interplay with the textile softness.

Design

The [001] Chair arrives as a striking blend of strength and softness. From the outside, the tubular frame reads like an architectural armature carrying the more organic interior. Its silhouette, expressive and structural, gives it presence in any interior, not just as seating but as a design statement. The Chamonix fabric cushions are sumptuous yet tailored, offering comfort without compromising visual precision.

Beyond appearance, the chair delivers a layered experience: the webbed rear support gives a gentle flex, the foam densities cradle the sitter, and the frame’s geometry maintains a sense of dynamic tension. In the studio or a living room, it feels composed, tactile, and purposeful, exactly what Beta Objects is about: objects that embody craft, thoughtful engineering, and a bold point of view.
