In collaboration with Holland & Sherry, [001] Chair is the debut creation from the Beta Objects series. The lounge chair showcases a fusion of British design and craftsmanship, proudly produced in the United Kingdom.
The design philosophy behind the [001] centres around a playful approach to form and usability with an inherent focus on function. To enhance both the visual appeal and comfort of the lounge chair, the cushions are upholstered in Holland & Sherry Chamonix fabric.
Taking inspiration from Beta's strong affinity for automotive design, a specialist racing roll-cage manufacturer was enlisted to construct the tubular frame that encompasses the tactile lounge cushions.
Multiple full-scale foamboard prototypes were created to test proportions and ergonomic angles, while aluminium tubing and 3D prints were used to visualise the frame's curvature.
Adjustments, such as increasing tubular steel diameter and arm height, were made before commissioning a final frame from the racing roll cage manufacturer. This iterative process ensured optimal proportions, ergonomics, and structural integrity for the end product.
The lounge chair features webbing straps and black passivated stainless steel fixings, providing both sprung support to the back cushion and a visually striking aesthetic from all angles. The upholsterer used a mix foam densities, ensuring optimal comfort and support for the user when seated.
The mandrill bent mild steel frame was meticulously fabricated and powder coated with a high gloss finish, creating a rich contrast to the Chamonix fabric cushions.
The Beta team sought an exceptional fabric to enhance the striking visual identity of the [ 001 ]. Collaborating with Holland & Sherry, they discovered Chamonix Sunset—a rich orange boucle fabric. It offered a bold aesthetic, great stretch qualities and a pleasing tactile experience, perfect for the chair's lifetime durability.
