Nought set out to create a scooter built for the real world - compact, powerful, and engineered for daily urban riding. With UK legislation set to make e-scooters road-legal, the timing was perfect to set a new benchmark for safety and performance. Beta was tasked with designing a market-leading scooter that combines agility, reliability, and a clean, rider-friendly experience.

introduction

We began by testing and tearing down competitor scooters, mapping out pain points and identifying gaps in the market. Over 18 months, we built and refined multiple prototypes, tuning the chassis geometry for a stable yet agile ride and selecting 10” tubeless tyres for smooth rolling and easy maintenance. Alongside this, we analysed how people store and move scooters in tight urban spaces. Including corridors, lifts, and ticket barriers, which led to a compact upright storage mode that makes the Nought. One easy to wheel and park where others struggle.

strategy

The OLED interface was pared back to show only what matters; speed, range, battery with colour-coded alerts for cruise control, indicators, and low battery. We prototyped different switch layouts to simplify the rider’s experience, distilling control down to three buttons. Each round of testing fed back into the design, making the scooter feel more intuitive, more robust, and more confident to use in real-world conditions.

interface

The final Nought. One is robust, compact, and ready for city life. It’s powered by a 500W rear hub motor, supported by low maintenance hub brakes front and rear that stay clean and consistent in all weather. Featuring a host of carefully engineered bespoke component, and features such as handlebar-mounted indicators, twin brake lights, and a bright front headlight help the rider see, and to be seen on the road, while a removable battery and aluminium centre stand make charging simple and parking stable.

Design

Beyond the specs, the Nought. One’s clean geometry and minimal interface give it a calm confidence, while its compact form and upright storage mode make it one of the easiest scooters to live with day-to-day. It’s a design built not just to move people quickly, but to integrate seamlessly into their urban lives, a scooter that finally matches the pace, scale, and character of the modern city.
